Bayern Munich sign Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels to five-year deal

Bayern Munich on Monday officially announced the signing of Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels to a five-year deal.

Borussia Dortmund had confirmed the news last week and the centre-back’s contract was due to expire in 2017. He passed a medical on Monday.

No details of the fee were announced but Dortmund were reported to be demanding around €35 million for the Germany centre-back, which would represent the highest ever transfer fee for a Bundesliga player entering the final 12 months of a contract.

Dortmund had been obliged to issue a statement last month confirming that the 27-year-old had indicated that he wanted to return to Bayern, where he had started his career before moving to the Westfalenstadion, initially on loan, in 2008.

Hummels, 27, captained Dortmund in the DFB Pokal final against Bayern Munich on Saturday ahead of his summer switch to the Allianz Arena, but he was replaced by Matthias Ginter 78 minutes into the penalty shootout defeat.

Hummels, who has spent eight-and-a-half years with Dortmund, denied coach Thomas Tuchel’s claim he had asked to be substituted during the DFB Pokal final and said he felt “extremely bitter” that he could not complete his final match for the club.
