Abducted ex-Ondo Speaker, regains freedom

After 72 hours in the den of kidnappers, a former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr. Victor Olabimtan, has regained his freedom.

The former lawmaker was reportedly freed on Wednesday evening at about 9pm.

His release was confirmed in a statement by the Secretary, Victor Olabimtan Initiative for Change and Emancipation, Mr. Gboyega Ajayi.

The statement explained that the All Progressives Congress chieftain regained his freedom in Abuja and has been taken to hospital for checkup.

Ajaye expressed appreciation for the support of the security agencies, the federal government and the people of the state.

“We thank and appreciate the Federal government under the able leadership of President Buhari, the Nigeria Police and other security agencies, Leaders of All Progressive Congress at the national and the Ondo state chapter,” he said.

However, it was not confirmed whether the N20m ransom demanded by the kidnappers was paid before Olabimtan was released.

Olabimtan was kidnapped in Kwali, near Gwagwalada on Monday on his way to attend a meeting in Abuja.

His abduction came less than a week after he declared his intention to contest the Ondo State governorship election, scheduled to take place in October.
